Political Roundtable: News, Opinion and Commentary

If I’d been standing at Hillary’s podium last night, I might well have blown it with . Even a hint of anger would be enough to bring a woman down. You know how emotional we women are. The media would have loved that. But already the media is loving the fun they’re having with Hillary. It’s almost as much fun as they had with Howard Dean.

One thing I learned from last night’s ‘debate’ — I need to pay as much attention to the moderators as I do to the candidates. Alegre over at dkos and Taylor Marsh did that

Russert’s penchantall boys pannels on “Meet the Press,”

Tim Russert sure didn’t think to quiz Obama about his rough week with the Audacity of Homophobia. And why do I think Russert would have shown no mercy to Hillary if she’d been the one caught traveling with a known homophobe?

In my view, the lowest blow of the night was when Edwards and Obama (and I think Mike Dodd joined in too) repeated the Republicans’ favorite Hillary talking point, the one about how Hillary is the GOP’s dream candidate — the one and only candidate that they can easily beat.

Because Giuliani is trembling in his boots over the prospect of debating Obama.

Yes, I know Hillary is not progressive enough, yet last night she was the only candidate progressive enough to defend Spitzer’s progressive immigration policy. Everyone else was too busy doing favors for the Republican Party. I want a Democrat in the White House. If Hillary’s not progressive enough, we can work on that after she moves in. Unless we, or the media, blow it, again.

Nov. 1: Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Senator Joseph Biden issued this statement after hearing remarks made by Judge Michael Mukasey, one of the nominees being considered to replace Alberto Gonzales as U.S. attorney general. Judge Mukasey evaded the question posed to him regarding waterboarding as a form of torture used on detainees.

I am disappointed by Judge Mukasey’s response,” commented Senator Biden. “He was asked a direct question on the specifics of waterboarding, and he refused to unequivocally state that this practice is torture. For this reason, I shall oppose his nomination to be the United States Attorney General.”

Waterboarding is by any standard, torture. I call on my colleagues today to support legislation I introduced this summer banning waterboarding and other forms of torture. We need to send a clear message that torture, inhumane, and degrading treatment of detainees is unacceptable and is not permitted by U.S. law. Period.

“We cannot have a United States Attorney General who will equivocate and dissemble on this matter. Too much is at stake.

Stephen Colbert, funny man for Comedy Central, announces his candidacy to run for President in 2008 Election. Due to the expensive nature of GOP filing for the Republican party, Colbert has filed for the Democratic GOP in his home state, South Carolina. Although, most politicians are skeptical to how honorable his intentions are and think that he is making a mockery of the election process, Colbert has stated, ” I shall seek the office of the President of the United States.”

Several South Carolina Councilmen have stated that there is no way that he would make the ballot for the 2008 Primary in South Carolina. However, his team is fairly confident that he will make the ballot due to his enormous celebrity status and his ability to carry the youth vote. It wouldn’t be the first time that an entertainment celebrity has run and been elected; proving this point further, in 1980 Ronald Reagan was elected as the President and as recently as in 2003, Arnold Schwarzenegger was elected as California’s governor. Americans have always loved celebrities and due to their popularity, celebrities prove to be successful candidates.

There are a couple of protests that Democratic politicians are making with this most recent news. Some think it will bring in the young voters. Some think that he is making a mockery of the election process. Some think that he can’t be successful if he only campaigns in South Carolina. First, he will definitely bring in young voters. Second, whether or not he is making a mockery of the election process is yet to be seen. He has written a book, “I Am America (And So Can You!)”, where he has publicly mocked the presidential election process, so I can see why people, mainly uptight politicians, are skeptical. However, his decision to only campaign in the South Carolina primary is strategically a smart move. South Carolina, which holds its primary in January of 2008, has proved to be an integral component of the nomination process and is a good indicator of how successful a candidate will be.

Needless to say, Stephen Colbert has stated he has every intention of running for President and with the way he can communicate and bring in the youth, he has a strong chance of making a push up the Democratic ladder.
