Suppose that you are personally offended by a social behavior of the public at large. Let’s use handholding as an example. You have not really liked to hold hands and are very uncomfortable when you are around others engaged in handholding. You learn one day that there are other people who believe as you do: that handholding should be avoided and discouraged.

Because like-minded people seek each other out, you and your other anti-handholding friends reinforce each other’s meme that handholding has more problems than benefits. Knowing this, you develop a list of reasons why handholding is a problem: it spreads disease and it can be sign that you are weak and dependent upon others. Handholders are frequently oblivious to other people and events in their presence and, therefore, are at risk of being assaulted, causing an accident, and suffering harm. Handholding may also lead to other body parts coming in contact and this could lead to indiscretions, adultery, babies born out-of-wedlock, increased carbon footprints, and consequently contribute to some unknown global catastrophe of  biblical proportions alluded to in Revelations.

The Anti-Handholding Movement (AHM for a safer America!) is born. First, you and your friends spread the word among your co-workers, church groups, family, and extended friendships that handholding in your presence is not acceptable and you will let them know it regularly until they stop holding hands in your presence. You feel a little silly at first, but then you achieve some success with those that defer to your idiosyncrasy and, later on, you abandon your relationships with those that do not defer to you. (After all, you are the Center of the Universe and have expressed yourself on this subject.) You are now a believer in your cause and are being reinforced by the other believers.

One day, you and your AHM friends are walking downtown and are offended by the sight of three couples that are engaged in handholding right there on the street! An unimaginable horror descends upon all of you when your request to the three couples to stop handholding is met with “Mind your own damn business!”. Your reasons for not handholding are scorned bythe handholders. Your indignation is subject to laughter and you are called “NAMES”. (NAMES! Mind you, NAMES!) You are offended that you have been subject to namecalling and you all stomp away muttering under your breath that people just don’t know what is good for them.

Unwilling to live with the shame of name calling, your belief system rationalizes that something must be done about all this handholding or it will become endemic in society.Children will be taught handholding by misinformed parents. Millions of children will risk harm, disease,and accidents. Unwanted pregancies and abortions will increase. TEOTWAWKI will ensue! (

“We must organize” your AHM friends say. So you develeop your awareness campaign, then your strategic plan, then your fundraising campaign, and finally your lobbyist is hired. You are now poised to use the force of law to prevent handholding. You are counting votes and realize that you are falling short. Worry sets in. Will it all be for naught? The hard work, the sacrifice, the impending let down?

An idea! This AHM should become part of the election. It’s an ISSUE! With the right approach, AHM could be adopted by a major party. All you need to do is to convince people in the AHM to only vote for candidates with AHM tendencies. Success! They agree! Now you can approach the Democrat and the Republican Party with your constituency of voters. You can deliver to the Party thousands of votes if they endorse your cause.

The Party is concerned about your offer. They also need votes from both handholders and anti-handholders if they wish to hold power in our democracy. They are unwilling to place your cause on the party platform but have decided to re-style the ANTI-HANDHOLDING MOVEMENT into the SAVE THE GLOVES campaign. They explain to the AHM movement that although handholding is still permitted this will still reduce the negative effects of handholding by reducing disease, by removing distractions from touching another person, and this wil improve attention span and therefore reduce accidents and sexual stimulation. The carbon footprint will be reduced because babies will not be born and the biblical destruction of mankind can be averted.

Not completely satisfied, yet ”half a loaf is better than none”, the AHM leaders decide to support the Party and give their backing to the Party candidate.

Soon the candidate is elected, the AHM leaders press for legislation and the Party forces its candidates to vote for this legislation to SAVE THE GLOVES. It is now a crime to touch your child with anything excpet ant-bacterial gloves on your hands. Several people are thrown into jail for this heinous act and the AHM monitors the public at large each year to learn if the punshment should be increased in order to set an example to everyone of the importance of non-handholding. “Abstinence is the best prevention,” they cluck.

Note to the reader: In the above scenario you can see how motorcycle helmets, cigarettes, seatbelts, birth control, abortions, spitting on sidewalks, and ‘forcing little girls to be vaccinated against cervical cancer’ have all come under the force of law.  These laws were put in place by Republicans and Democrats.

Vote Responsibly. Save America. Don’t vote Republican or Democrat.

Elect people who mind their own business and not yours.
