Almost two months after Connecticut’s primary, looks like the nomination fight is still paying Democratic Party registration dividends in the Nutmeg State. From CT Local Politics (via the Jim Himes campaign blog):
“There is an incredible renewed sense of enthusiasm and interest in the political process,” said Bysiewicz. “The surge in voter registration we experienced before the February 5th primary has continued through March. This is great news as we head toward our goal of two million active registered voters for the 2008 presidential election.”Currently, there are 1,941,035 registered voters in Connecticut. Among newly registered voters nearly 9,000 Democrats and 2,600 Republicans registered to vote. Additionally, more than 8,000 unaffiliated voters registered. Of the nearly 20,000 newly registered voters, more than 4,500 are between the ages of 18 and 29. Since February 5th, among newly registered younger voters, Democratic registration has outpaced Republican registration: 2,311 to 469.
Incredible. Also notable to compare the raw party reg numbers between 2004 and now. Democrats are the only category growing, up 3% since 2004 to 36.7% of total registration, threatening to challenge the dominance of unaffiliateds.
I’d be willing to bet there are similar post-primary numbers all over the country. I’d be particularly interested to see comparable statistics for nearby New Jersey in light of the new Rasmussen poll showing McCain up over Clinton and Obama (albeit within the margin of error.) Despite McCain’s showing strength in places like New Jersey, which every two years seems to have a new flirtation with a Republican that it never follows through on, once the Democratic primary is over I fully expect states to return to their 2004 red/blue/purple hues with swing states trending a bit bluer this year. I have to say I think the talk of McCain being a map changer is exagerrated but let him be lulled into a false sense that he can win a state like NJ. Spend some money and time there, St. John. Please.
