Talk about celebrity backlash.
Who would have dreamed a People magazine cover, cheering crowds in the anti-American capitals of Europe and darling-hood in Hollywood and beyond might come back to bite Sen. Barack Obama in his vision quest for the White House?
But that’s the theme of Sen. John MCain’s latest barrage of ads against the so-called celebrity candidate who spawned the Obama girls, and has captured the imagination —- and mega-millions in contributions — of the masses, not to mention Rolling Stone status in Europe.
In a daring strategy to use celebrity to undermine Obama–in a country obsessed with it — McCain risks alienating tabloid fans, watchers of ET, Extra, and a host of magazines that serve up a buffet of boffo, including the Obama family on the cover of People.
Tell us how you think it will play, an ad that uses images of Britney, Paris and others to tar a frontrunner. We’ve yet to see a photo-shopped shot of Dog, the Bounty Hunter, boozing with Barack, but can that be far behind?
Yet that one would be easy to spin back–Barack as a broker of foregiveness … doing what Al Sharpton cannot do. I mean, if he can pardon Jesse, why not Dog?
