My favorite style of poem, the minute, is made up of 60 syllables (first line 4A, second 4A, third 4B, then the fourth 8B, continuing 4C/4C/4D/8D then 4E/4E/4F/8F and ending with a couplet 4G/4G. Generally a minute is iambic in meter, though my example below falls short on this front. Still, I wanted to write a Barrack Obama minute, and here what I came up with, though I want to work on it a little more.
So Obama’s
not our mamas’
presidential
candidate. How monumental!
Us at our best!
We beat our chests
and sounded drums
of war for far too long. Our sums
don’t equal all
our parts. We fall
when divided.
Come January - united
behind Barrack!
Goodbye Iraq!
And here’s a little different version of the same poem as I tried to work in Barrack’s campaign slogan:
So Obama’s
not our mamas’
presidential
candidate. How monumental!
Us at our best!
We beat our chests
and sounded drums
of war too long! But hope? It comes!
A George Bush Ban?
Hell yes we can!
No great divide
as we rebuild our nation’s pride
behind Barrack!
Goodbye Iraq!
