So when we originally asked “Will they go?” we wanted to find out how many sitting Republican senators would deign to attend their own party’s convention. It didn’t occur to us that the sitting Vice President would be among those to sit it out. But The American Spectator is reporting that indeed, Dick Cheney won’t go!
Cheney has not sought a speaking slot at the convention, nor has his staff sought a role for him at the convention. The McCain campaign has not gone out of its way to reach out to Cheney, though a segment of conservative Republicans had been pressing the campaign to include Cheney in the convention agenda. […]
McCain and Cheney famously do not get along, and with McCain’s focus being almost exclusively on attracting independents and women to the polls, it’s not a surprise that engaging Cheney isn’t on the top of his list.
Note how that last paragraph implies that McCain intends to use the convention to reach out to independents and women and, ergo, keep conservatives at a distance. Man I hope that’s McCain’s plan. Conservatives are gonna go apeshit. They sold their soul and bit their lip in 2000 to allow a guy they thought was one of them to pretend to be a moderate and what they got was larger government, a skyrocketing national debt and a disastrous pre-emptive war. You think they’re going to make that mistake again, and for a guy they already don’t trust? This is gonna be fun to watch.
