The DNC is redefining the concept of pre-emptive strikes with the launch of their new site TheNextCheney.com.

The new site assails rumored McCain VP candidates by linking them to Vice President Dick Cheney. Those with alleged Cheney-like similarities include: Charlie Crist, Eric Cantor, Carly Fiorina, Tim Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, Fred Smith and John Thune.

Having briefly scanned the site, I can report that several of the connections appear pretty flimsy, though highly amusing. However, there are a few good zingers on there (e.g. highlighting Crist, Pawlenty’s past troubles with campaign disclosures).

But beyond the content, the concept of attacking VP contenders – before an official candidate has been named – is a fascinating idea and shows just how committed the DNC is about taking back the White House in November. The site also does a nice job of reinforcing the Party’s message that a John McCain presidency would represent a third Bush term.

According to a release from the DNC, the Party plans to add videos on each of the potential Veeps over the next week, as well as more info on where the contenders stand on the issues.
