Political Roundtable: News, Opinion and Commentary

-By Warner Todd Huston

So, The One was in front of his subjects of the Black Congressional Caucus in D.C. and was wowing them with the mellifluous tones of his oratory and there stood the little missus. There was that mean Mama all a flutter over her man — you know, the one that made her proud of America for the very first time? — and the messiah deigned to notice her across the room.

The One thought to bring her before the enraptured crowd and let everyone know that the Dear Leader was having his 15th Anniversary with Michelle the Angry. She just about has me trained. Almost. I still do stupid things she tells me sometimes,” he jests.

What a wonderful day. A 15th wedding anniversary… well, maybe Barack is a bit late with that celebration? You see, he is supposed to be celebrating his 16th wedding anniversary, not his 15th. From October of 1992 to October 2008 is 16 for most of us.

Oh, these things happen. Especially to men, let’s face it. Many, many men throughout time have forgotten little details like, Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, birthdays… men sometimes don’t have a mind for these dates so important to women. So, to be fair, we cannot do much else but chuckle at this little slip.

But, here is the thing. If John McCain had made such a glaring error the Old Media would be crucifying him over it. He and his wife would be the butt of jokes on every late-might TV talk show, would be portrayed as a doddering, senile old fool by every barely listened to PACIFICA or Air America host, and would be the hottest topic of ridicule from all the partisan pseudo-analysts in every medium from pulp to electronics.

And guess what?

Obama is getting a pass.

It’s hard for the media to even see daylight anymore they are so in the tank.

Senator Obama has been criticized for statements from rapper Ludacris, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr and now Florida Congressman Alcee Hastings.  I am not sure if it is relevant (except to conspiracy theorists) but Rep Hastings has been widely identified as an outspoken Clinton supporter in the primary election.

Last week, at a panel on the shared agenda of Jewish and African-American Democrats during the annual conference of the National Jewish Democratic Council, Hastings told attendees what he intended to tell his Jewish constituents about the importance of supporting Sen. Obama in November’s presidential election. “If Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention,” Hastings said last week. “Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through,” he added.

I am not exactly sure what the statement means.  Is he implying that right wing, conservative, NRA members are not that concerned about black folks and jewish folks (which I may agree with, at least generally)?  Is he trying to simply use fear tactics?  I don’t know but I do know that politicians and supporters have to recognize that their inflammatory statements can ultimately do more harm then good.  Unfortunately at a time when all momentum is behind Senator Obama and for the first time the media is actually questioning the candidates on issues, this type of statement could serve as the type of distraction that the McCain/Palin camp is looking for.  A quick message to Obama supporters.  If you feel the passion building up in the next few weeks and the urge is building up to say something silly…. SHHHHHHHHH

Planned Parent is cashing in on Sarah Palin as the VP nominee for the Republican Party. John McCain’s running mate, Sarah Palin has been a “vocal opponent of abortion,” so pro-choice folks are ponying up to make a statement about Palin’s nomination by donating to Planned Parenthood in her name:

Make a donation to Planned Parenthood, the anonymous e-mail message urged. Of any amount. In Sarah Palin’s name.

The message, which began circulating widely on the Internet last week, had one more instruction: request that the personalized thank-you card from Planned Parenthood be sent to Ms. Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee and a vocal opponent of abortion, at the McCain-Palin campaign headquarters in Virginia.

So far, the scheme seems to be getting a strong response. As of Friday, Planned Parenthood had taken in $802,678 in donations from 31,313 people, said a spokesman for the organization, Tait Sye. More than two-thirds of the individuals are first-time donors to Planned Parenthood, Mr. Sye said, and money came in from all 50 states.

The Caucus reports that “Ms. Palin’s status as a fund-raising draw for Planned Parenthood puts her in the company of President Bush, who was the target of a similar scheme in 2001, said Patt Morrison, a columnist for The Los Angeles Times who took credit for the idea.”

I envisioned a scene out of ‘Miracle on 34th Street,’ Ms. Morrison wrote on The Huffington Post last week, sacks and sacks of thank-you cards from Planned Parenthood, delivered to Bush in the Oval Office.

Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, called the response phenomenal, and said she wanted to personally thank the tens of thousands of individuals who responded to this call to action.

Planned Parenthood has said they will ”begin mailing the thank-you cards next week.” Get involved… Donate here. McCain-Palin in the White House will turn the clock back on women’s rights and we can’t afford to let that happen.

To give you an idea about where Palin stands on women’s issues like birth control and abortion, here’s an excerpt from Palin’s interview with Katie Couric:

Couric: If a 15-year-old is raped by her father, do you believe it should be illegal for her to get an abortion, and why?

Palin: I am pro-life. And I’m unapologetic in my position that I am pro-life. And I understand there are good people on both sides of the abortion debate. In fact, good people in my own family have differing views on abortion, and when it should be allowed. Do I respect people’s opinions on this. Now, I would counsel to choose life. I would also like to see a culture of life in this country. But I would also like to take it one step further. Not just saying I am pro-life and I want fewer and fewer abortions in this country, but I want them, those women who find themselves in circumstances that are absolutely less than ideal, for them to be supported, and adoptions made easier.

Couric: But ideally, you think it should be illegal for a girl who was raped or the victim of incest to get an abortion?

Palin: I’m saying that, personally, I would counsel the person to choose life, despite horrific, horrific circumstances that this person would find themselves in. And, um, if you’re asking, though, kind of foundationally here, should anyone end up in jail for having an … abortion, absolutely not. That’s nothing I would ever support.

Couric: Some people have credited the morning-after pill for decreasing the number of abortions. How do you feel about the morning-after pill?

Palin: Well, I am all for contraception. And I am all for preventative measures that are legal and save, and should be taken, but Katie, again, I am one to believe that life starts at the moment of conception. And I would like to see …

Couric: And so you don’t believe in the morning-after pill?

Palin: … I would like to see fewer and fewer abortions in this world. And again, I haven’t spoken with anyone who disagrees with my position on that.

Couric: I’m sorry, I just want to ask you again. Do you not support or do you condone or condemn the morning-after pill.

Palin: Personally, and this isn’t McCain-Palin policy …

Couric: No, that’s OK, I’m just asking you.

Palin: But personally, I would not choose to participate in that kind of

I’m not looking for more of the same come November and I sure as hell don’t want to see women’s rights that I have fought for turned back so that young women like my 19 year old daughter are effected by an VP with views like Palin’s… It’s time to put a Democrat in the White House.
