Senator Obama has been criticized for statements from rapper Ludacris, Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr and now Florida Congressman Alcee Hastings.  I am not sure if it is relevant (except to conspiracy theorists) but Rep Hastings has been widely identified as an outspoken Clinton supporter in the primary election.

Last week, at a panel on the shared agenda of Jewish and African-American Democrats during the annual conference of the National Jewish Democratic Council, Hastings told attendees what he intended to tell his Jewish constituents about the importance of supporting Sen. Obama in November’s presidential election. “If Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention,” Hastings said last week. “Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through,” he added.

I am not exactly sure what the statement means.  Is he implying that right wing, conservative, NRA members are not that concerned about black folks and jewish folks (which I may agree with, at least generally)?  Is he trying to simply use fear tactics?  I don’t know but I do know that politicians and supporters have to recognize that their inflammatory statements can ultimately do more harm then good.  Unfortunately at a time when all momentum is behind Senator Obama and for the first time the media is actually questioning the candidates on issues, this type of statement could serve as the type of distraction that the McCain/Palin camp is looking for.  A quick message to Obama supporters.  If you feel the passion building up in the next few weeks and the urge is building up to say something silly…. SHHHHHHHHH
