I am truly mystified by the weekend chatter of Caroline Kennedy as the possible appointment to replace Hillary Clinton from New York to the US Senate. I have absolutely nothing against Caroline Kennedy. I am sure she’s a great American, a great patriot and a very cultured person, as many of the news commentators have pointed out over the last 48 hours.
But does being the daughter of a revered past President and the niece of a respected Senator bring to the table the full qualifications needed to represent the state of New York in such an important and critical time for our country? She would be involved in some of the most important decisions our nation has made in decades, maybe ever in its history. The hubris is stunning.
I have been an independent most of my adult life, but veered decidedly Democratic in this election of 2008. I am now sharply reminded why I have been an independent all these years. For me, it is about the most qualified candidate for the job, not about party or family or regional affiliation. I find this interest in Caroline Kennedy, who has zero practical political experience, to replace Hillary Clinton to be an insult to the process.
How easy to delve into politics when you don’t have to get down and dirty and campaign. How privileged to enter the hallowed halls of Congress without sullying yourself in public debate, door-to-door campaigning, the humility of fund-raising, the stress of answering hard questions from the press and political opponents who strive for the same brass ring.
This is not what we are supposed to be about in this country. How can any journalist who questioned Sarah Palin’s qualifications, consider for one millisecond that Caroline Kennedy, as educated, as gracious, as aristocratic as she is, would be ready to carry effectively the mantle of Senator without ever having even run for school board? Please don’t cause me to lose faith so soon in my recent conversion to the Democratic Party.
