First they boot their incompetent corrupt Democrat governor for an upstart Republican minority, and now they’ve booted their incompetent corrupt Democratic House rep for an upstart Republican minority.
Republicans made an aggressive push to take the 2nd District seat from the 61-year-old Jefferson, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of bribery, laundering money and misusing his congressional office.
The people of the 2nd District have spoken, Cao, 41, told supporters at a restaurant near the French Quarter. We want new direction. We want action. We want accountability.
In a speech that was gracious but stopped short of concession, Jefferson blamed low voter turnout for his showing and said supporters may have thought he was a shoo-in after he won a Nov. 4 primary in the predominantly black and heavily Democratic district. …
New Orleans voters had long been loyal to Jefferson, re-electing him in 2006 even after news of the bribery scandal broke. Late-night TV comics made him the butt of jokes after federal agents said they found $90,000 in alleged bribe money hidden in his freezer.
Good job 2nd District peeps! Better late than never.
Exit question; is this now a trend we can take seriously? I shrugged off the Chambliss win because I always though he would win big in the runoff, and not just because I expected the Obama supporters to stay home. Georgia, no matter hard hard the Dems might try to flip us, is a red state. Louisiana’s 2nd District, however, is about as blue as it gets. If, in a predominately blue area, voters don’t turn out to vote for congressional races because Obama isn’t on the ticket, what does that say about Dem chances in 2010? I guarantee you Republican turnout will be huge, and if Democrats don’t find something other than Obama’s name on a ballot to motivate people to vote for them they will lose most of what they just gained.
