Political Roundtable: News, Opinion and Commentary
My Top 3

Earlier today, I thought the governor of the state in the worst economic condition in the country was set to be appointed Labor Secretary. Fox News had reported that Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm looked to be Obama’s pick, but the AP is reporting otherwise. It now looks like Obama has selected a relatively unknown California Representative, Hilda Solis, to be his labor secretary.

I don’t have a lot to about Solis other than it will be a good four years for labor unions and a tough four years for businesses. Solis is your straight-line liberal Democrat, who has supported her party unions on every issue imaginable. You can see her stances on labor and employment issues here.

As you may have guessed, she is a co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act. Here is the statement from her website:

Defending Workers’ Rights to Organize
I am a strong supporter of workers’ rights and cosponsored the Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 800). This vital legislation strengthens the right to organize and opposes any effort to dismantle the 40-hour work week and the overtime requirements provided under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The new Democratic majority in the House successfully passed this critical piece of legislation and it is pending consideration in the U.S. Senate.

During her time in the House, she received a lifetime rating of 97 from the AFL-CIO and a perfect 100 in 2007.
