Dear Azerbaijani-Americans and everyone else who cares about the future of DEMOCRACY in our part of the world,
The Azerbaijani-Americans for Democracy (AZAD) group invites all of you to join us for a rally in front of UN Headquarters in New York City.
If you treasure the survival of Azerbaijan’s national statehood, the freedom and prosperity of its people, if you object to the country turning into a de-facto monarchy – please make your voices heard loudly and clearly. Let us RESPECT and REGARD our REPUBLIC. Let us demonstrate to the world that Azerbaijanis value the ideals of liberty and democracy. We believe in our FUTURE deeply rooted in our ADR heritage and its spirit. The fathers of ADR, the leaders of the first recognized democratic REPUBLIC in the Muslim world, started our long way to freedom in 1918 from the belief that democratic REPUBLIC is possible also in Muslim society.
The time has come to stand up for these values, in the name of Republic!
OUR MESSAGE TO THE WORLD: We appeal to all member countries and the leadership of the United Nations Organization who share universal values and ideals of democracy, rule of law and peaceful transfer of political power through free expression of people’s will, to consider our concerns and urge the Azerbaijani leadership to reject proposals aimed at removing term limits on presidency, thus demonstrating their commitment to the supremacy of democratic process, national statehood and civil society over the goal of keeping power in the hands of any specific individual.
A copy of the appeal will be delivered to the Ambassador of Azerbaijan in UN.
OUR MESSAGE TO THE GOVERNMENT OF AZERBAIJAN: We are gravely concerned about the intended changes to the constitution of Azerbaijan Republic that would eliminate term limits on presidency. We want to express our disagreement with the constitutional amendments for unlimited presidency and communicate to the Azerbaijani government the following points:
- These changes will shatter Azerbaijani national statehood and practically render its fundamental form of government, Republic, obsolete
- They will seriously undermine Azerbaijan’s image in the world and strengthen the perception of our native land being a backwards authoritarian country
- They will allow the enemies of Azerbaijan to use this negative image as a very potent argument against us in Karabakh conflict negotiations
This action is not directed for or against any political group, party, individual or government.
We will hold the rally and conclude by delivering our opinion to all members of UN.
